How do alerts work?

We download your web pages on a regular schedule (default every 30 minutes). If we fail to download the required page, we immediately repeat the test on another agent on a different carrier, thereby eliminating any single point of failure from our monitoring. If we still cannot download your page then we open an error and send you an alert. The monitoring frequency is then doubled until we detect that your home page is available again.*

* Frequency of testing remains constant at 30 minutes for basic Alerting Customers.

How does escalation work?

We have three levels of alert contacts within escalation profile. When an error occurs we send an alert to the list of people you nominate. If after a further period of time, which you stipulate, the page is still unavailable, we will send another alert, this time to the list of people you nominated for the second level of escalation. This continues to a third level if the error reaches the third alert level.

We suggest that you use the first level of escalation to alert your technical staff or your hosting company, and use the second and third levels to tell management that the selected page is still unavailable.

Once we have sent escalation alerts, any contacts who received them will also be sent a recovery notification when the page becomes available again.

Escalation is only available on our Silver and Gold service levels.

Why am I getting so many alerts?

The reason you will receive a large number of alerts is due to either errors opening and closing rapidly, a sign of an intermittent issue, or a large number of pages being affected by the same fault.

Can I suspend alerts temporarily?

Yes. The alert status of any page can be viewed in either current status or settings within My Area. To suspend Alerting un-tick the Send Alerts box.

What do the error codes mean?

When we test your site your web server report back with a code. These codes are called HTTP status codes. For a comprehensive list of the HTTP status codes and what they mean click here.

We also perform a variety of other checks on your content and we generate our own custom codes accordingly. You can find details of these once you are logged in to My Area.

Can I specify the types of error I want to be alerted about?

Yes, but only with our Gold Service.

Can I let other people see my reports without giving them my user details?

Yes. From your browser, click on the File topic on the menu bar, and then click on Send -> Page by Email. When you receive email alerts, you can forward those to anyone. The person who receives that email can click the link to see the status of that specific error on our site, but cannot gain general access to your data and results.
